China Built the WORLD'S largest waste to energy Plant in Shanghai
China has built the world's largest waste to energy plant, capable of processing over 3 million tons of waste annually and generating 1.5 billion kWh of electricity, without the use of coal. Waste to energy technology is a form of power generation that incinerates solid waste in a specialized boiler and converts the heat into electricity through a steam turbine generator set. The technology originated in the 1970s in developed countries like Europe and the United States. China's waste incineration power generation technology has rapidly developed in recent years, impressing many western countries with advancements from fixed grate incinerators to circulating fluidized bed boilers.
Waste to energy can be divided into two methods: waste incineration power generation and waste landfill power...

Shanghai Electric-built largest thermal power plant in Iraq illuminates with 20% total electricity
The Huashide Power Plant in Iraq, constructed by Shanghai Electric Group, is situated along the Tigris River in Wasit Province. As of now, Iraq's largest thermal power plant has generated nearly 150 billion kilowatt-hours, constituting approximately 20% of the country's total electricity generation.
During peak times, it provides 70% of the power supply for the capital, Baghdad, alleviating electricity demand in scorching Iraqi summers, often exceeding 50 degrees Celsius. The plant has also generated nearly 3,000 local jobs, with 200 Iraqis receiving technical training in Shanghai and over 1,000 undergoing maintenance training at the plant.
Despite challenges, such as the 2014 capture of Mosul by Islamic State (IS) militants, the Chinese staff chose to stay and ensure Iraq's power supply...

Waste to energy can be divided into two methods: waste incineration power generation and waste landfill power generation. To use waste to generate electricity, various types of waste are collected and sorted. Non-recyclable waste suitable for incineration is shredded and transformed into burning balls, which are then incinerated at high temperatures to produce steam for electricity generation. For non-burnable waste, special fermentation and anaerobic methods are used to produce methane gas, known as biogas, which is burned to generate electricity. Recyclable waste is recycled efficiently.
While waste to energy offers significant benefits in terms of waste management and electricity generation, there are also challenges to consider when promoting it on a large scale. These challenges include ensuring effective waste sorting and collection systems, addressing environmental concerns related to emissions and ash disposal from incineration, managing the costs of waste transportation and treatment, and overcoming public perception and acceptance issues. However, many countries are continuously developing and improving waste to energy technologies as a sustainable solution for waste management.
